Diwali & the Essential Ritual of Gift Giving
Indian festivals are just the best, aren’t they? These special occasions often bring loved ones together to create happy memories that eventually strengthens familial bonds. Filled with rituals, scrumptious food and festivities, these special days can cheer up even the dullest soul.
One of the most loved and revered festivals that Indians celebrate within a year is Diwali. Known largely as the festival of lights, Diwali is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika which falls between mid-October and mid-November. Beyond the Hindu religion, the festival is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs and some sects of Buddhists.
The Five Day Long Fanfare
Diwali that signifies the triumph of good over evil is celebrated over a period of five days. The beginning of the grand festivities start with Dhanteras which is also called the festival of wealth. The highly auspicious day is marked by Indian families making important purchases for their homes and businesses including precious metals and utensils.
This is followed by the Naraka Chaturdashi which is known as Choti Diwali. This is when the grand festivities kick in for most families and the day is marked by actions towards abolishing laziness and evil.
Then comes the day everybody has been waiting for, which is Lakshmi Pujan or Badi Diwali. Families toil throughout the day to adorn their homes using lights, flowers, colors and much more. It is believed that goddess Lakshmi visits her devotees’ houses and bestows them with blessings of prosperity. This is the primary reason why most families open their doors and windows after the Lakshmi pujan commences and light diyas & candles. Families also celebrate by bursting bright crackers and meeting with their loved ones.
This day is followed by Diwali Padwa which celebrates the bond between the wife and husband. The last day to mark the festivities is Bhai Dooj which is a festival that celebrates the loving bond between siblings.
With this the much awaited festival of lights and love comes to a close only to arrive next year.
The Ritual of Gift Giving
Diwali which is associated with prosperity also gives a special place to the ritual of gift giving. The age old tradition is celebrated event today to promote the feeling of love, appreciation, gratitude and prosperity.
During Diwali it is common to exchange gifts between families, friends, neighbors, professional acquaintances among others. Irrespective of the size and nature of the items exchanged, these gifts denote much more than their financial value and honor the Indian traditions & culture. It also promotes the feeling of bonding and oneness among others. Therefore, the festival of Diwali is absolutely incomplete without the ritual of gift giving.
Finding the Right Gifts
But we all want our gifts to be cherished and appreciated by their recipients. We also wish to bring a smile on their faces upon opening these gifts. Unfortunately the most common gifts exchanged during the festival is sweets or cookie cutter showpieces etc. Haven’t we all heard of jokes about re-gifting the last year’s box of dryfuits or Patisa?
